Kallakurichi TragedyMadras High Court Demands Action Report from Tamil Nadu Government Following Spurious Liquor Tragedy Kallakurichi

On Friday, the Madras High Court instructed the Tamil Nadu government to submit a report detailing the actions taken after the deaths of 47 individuals in Kallakurichi district due to the consumption of spurious liquor

The bench, comprising Justice D Krishnakumar and Justice K Kumaresh Babu, also questioned the State government on its failure to prevent the tragedy, especially since a similar incident had occurred last year in neighboring districts.

The Court noted that local newspapers and a YouTuber had reported the presence of illegal spurious liquor in the area weeks before the Kallakurichi incident.

The directive came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by AIADMK’s legal wing secretary, IS Inbadurai, who is seeking a CBI probe into the matter. Advocate D Selvam, representing Inbadurai, informed the Court that AIADMK MLA M Senthilkumar had raised a specific motion regarding the sale of spurious liquor on March 29, 2023, but no action was taken by the State government.

Tamil Nadu Advocate General (AG) PS Raman informed the Court that the investigation had been handed over to the CBCID, with four individuals arrested and several police personnel suspended. He stated that the State’s current focus was on saving lives and investigating the lapses in action.

The bench, however, emphasized the importance of addressing the issue seriously, considering the loss of human lives. The Court sought details on the actions taken since the previous incident last year and the steps to address the failures of police and district officials.

The Tamil Nadu government was directed to file a “detailed action report” by June 26, outlining the measures taken since the MLA’s motion and the actions following last year’s incident.
