Amidst allegations of a paper leak and mounting controversies surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) undergraduate exam 2024, the Supreme Court has emphasized the need for prompt action from the National Testing Agency (NTA).
A vacation bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice SVN Bhatti expressed its expectations during a hearing on Tuesday, regarding a petition seeking the cancellation of the NEET exam conducted in May this year.
“We expect timely action from you (NTA). Let us hear the petitions on July 8,” remarked the bench.
Apart from the alleged paper leak, the NEET 2024 exam has been marred by additional issues, including concerns raised by students regarding the marking procedure.
During a previous hearing on June 13, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that candidates who were deprived of the allotted exam duration would have the option to either retake the exam or forfeit the grace marks previously awarded due to time loss.
Furthermore, media reports have highlighted an unusually high number of candidates achieving perfect scores, as indicated by the results released on June 4.
In today’s proceedings, the Centre urged the court not to form any conclusions on the allegations until a comprehensive response is submitted on the matter.
However, counsel representing the petitioners emphasized the hard work of the students, stressing the critical importance of maintaining the integrity of the examination process.
“Imagine the implications of doctors graduating under such circumstances… It is essential to investigate the extent of mobile phone usage during the exam,” the Court was informed.
The Supreme Court’s stance underscores the gravity of the situation surrounding the NEET exam and underscores the need for transparency and accountability in addressing these issues promptly.
