Manipur Unrest: Mob Violence Escalates in Jiribam District,Mob sets fire to 2 empty Meitei homes in Jiribam

Amidst heightened tensions, Jiribam district in Manipur faces escalating violence with over 70 houses destroyed, forcing thousands to flee, despite increased security measures.

Violence has erupted once again in Manipur’s Jiribam district, resulting in significant property damage and displacement of residents. The latest incident saw a mob setting fire to two abandoned Meitei houses in Jiribam, adding to the toll of over 70 homes destroyed across both communities. This escalation has forced over a thousand people to seek refuge in safer areas of neighboring Assam and within Jiribam itself.

The unrest follows the grim discovery of a beheaded body on June 6, which triggered renewed tensions and halted commercial activities in the key border hub. Despite the deployment of additional security forces, including Manipur Police and central forces, to prevent further violence, the situation remains tense.

In response to the volatile conditions, the All Jiribam Muslim Welfare Society (AJMWS) has announced restrictions on recreational and entertainment activities during the Eid-ul-Adha festival. The society’s decision, made in a meeting at Sonapur, Jiribam, underscores the somber mood in the district. Eid-ul-Adha prayers will proceed at local mosques, with gatherings at the Eidgah restricted to express condolences.

AJMWS has called for special prayers on Eid day to restore peace and honor those affected by the violence. They urge Muslim residents to avoid unnecessary movements within Jiribam, emphasizing the need for calm during this turbulent period in Manipur.
