On Sunday, a tragic accident occurred in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area, Vedant Agarwal, the son of Brahma Realty builder Vishal Agarwal , driving a Porsche, collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Vedant Agarwal was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
A Pune court has ordered the police custody of three individuals until May 24. These individuals include Naman Bhutada, owner of Cosie Hotel; Sachin Katkar, bar counter manager; and Sachin Sangle, manager of Blak Club. They have been arrested for serving alcohol to Vedant Agarwal.
Legal Proceedings Against Vedant Agarwal: He faces several serious charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Act. These charges include:
- Rash and negligent driving
- Causing harm by endangering safety
- Death by negligence (Sections 304A, 279, 337, and 338 of the IPC)
- Culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304 of the IPC)
Given the severity of the incident, there is a strong likelihood that the minor will be tried as an adult.
Juvenile Justice Board Decision Despite the gravity of the charges, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Pune granted bail to the minor on Sunday. The conditions of the bail require the minor to:
- Write a 300-word essay on road accidents after studying traffic rules and regulations at the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
- Ensure that his parents take responsibility to keep him away from future offenses and bad influences.
It has been reported that the father of Vedant Agarwal – Vishal Agarwal; has also been arrested, although he has not yet been presented in court for custody.
This case highlights a disturbing misuse of power and influence. The individuals directly responsible for the deaths of two innocent people appear to be evading significant consequences, bringing to light issues of injustice and the stark disparity in how the law treats those with wealth and status compared to the common citizen. This tragic incident underscores the need for a more equitable legal system where all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status, are held accountable for their actions.
