Supreme Court Seeks Response on NEET-UG Exam Irregularities, Considers CBI Probe, Hearing Set for July 8

In a significant development concerning the ongoing controversy surrounding the NEET-UG exam, the Supreme Court has requested responses from various stakeholders, including the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA), regarding a plea for a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities, including question paper leaks.

The Supreme Court’s vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Hiten Singh Kashyap, prompting the court to seek responses from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Bihar government within a fortnight. The PIL, along with other pending matters, is scheduled for further consideration on July 8, following the court’s summer recess.

In response to the allegations, the Centre and NTA disclosed that they had annulled the grace marks previously awarded to 1,563 candidates who participated in the NEET-UG examination for medical and related courses. These candidates now have the option to undergo a retest or forego the additional marks, as per the Centre’s statement. Notably, the exam took place on May 5 across 4,750 centers, with approximately 24 lakh candidates participating. Although the results were initially slated for release on June 14, they were announced earlier on June 4 due to the swift completion of answer sheet evaluations.

The controversy surrounding the NEET-UG exam extends beyond mere allegations of question paper leaks, with reports of irregularities emerging from various states, notably Bihar. These concerns have sparked protests in numerous cities and prompted legal action in seven high courts, including the Supreme Court. The NEET-UG exam, administered by the NTA, serves as the gateway to admission for various medical courses in both public and private institutions nationwide.
