Karanjot Singh Khurana Joins DMD Advocates as Partner in Direct Tax Practice

Karanjot Singh Khurana has joined DMD Advocates as a Partner in its Direct Tax Practice, the firm has confirmed. He moves from Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan Attorneys, where he spent eleven years building a wide-ranging direct tax advisory and litigation practice.

Khurana brings dual qualifications as a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) and an Advocate, pairing the analytical discipline of a chartered accountant with the advocacy skills of an experienced litigator. Over more than a decade in practice, he has represented domestic and international clients — including several Fortune 500 companies — across the full spectrum of judicial and quasi-judicial forums.

His appointment strengthens DMD Advocates’ tax bench at a time when cross-border structuring and transfer pricing disputes are commanding increasing attention from both inbound foreign investors and large domestic corporates.

Education Background and Career Progression

Career Journey

Karanjot Singh Khurana is a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) and an enrolled Advocate, combining professional qualifications across two disciplines. He began building his direct tax practice at Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan Attorneys, where he remained for eleven years before making his move to DMD Advocates.

During his tenure at Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, Khurana developed a practice spanning direct tax advisory, litigation, and complex cross-border work. He appeared before Assessing Officers, the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), Income Tax Appellate Tribunals, High Courts, and the Supreme Court of India, establishing a presence across all major forums at which direct tax matters are contested.

His transactional and advisory work covers cross-border transactions, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, international tax, transfer pricing, and market entry strategies for foreign entities seeking to establish operations in India. He has also collaborated with reputed foreign law firms on cross-border mandates, offering integrated advice that spans domestic law and applicable tax treaties — including treaty interpretation, permanent establishment exposure, withholding tax analysis, and income characterisation.

Beyond institutional clients, Khurana has advised High Net Worth Individuals and promoter families on estate and succession planning, involving structures such as trusts, limited liability partnerships, and holding entities.

What the Firm Said

Anuradha Dutt, Founder & Managing Partner, Delhi, DMD Advocates, said:

“We are pleased to welcome Karan to DMD Advocates. He brings a strong and well-rounded practice, with over a decade of experience in direct tax advisory and litigation, complemented by his dual qualification. His experience across forums, along with his work on complex cross-border matters, will add meaningful depth to our tax practice. We look forward to his contributions and wish him every success at the firm.”

Karanjot Singh Khurana said:

“DMD Advocates’ reputation for intellectual rigour, its client-centric ethos, and the strength of its practice across domains made it a natural choice for this next chapter. I look forward to contributing to the firm’s continued growth and to working with clients on their most complex direct tax challenges.”

Strategic Significance

Khurana’s dual qualification and eleven-year track record at Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan Attorneys give DMD Advocates a practitioner who can handle both the advisory and litigation dimensions of complex direct tax mandates. His experience with Fortune 500 clients, cross-border transactions, and transfer pricing adds depth to the firm’s tax practice, while his work on HNI and promoter family structuring opens an additional service line for the firm’s existing client base.
