SAM IP Partners Mukul Baveja and Apoorva Murali Set to Join Trilegal

Mukul Baveja and Apoorva Murali, both Intellectual Property Partners at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM), are leaving the firm to join Trilegal. The voting process to induct the two lawyers into Trilegal is currently ongoing.

The move marks a significant shift in India’s IP legal landscape, with two senior practitioners departing one of the country’s leading full-service firms for another. SAM and Trilegal had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.

Education Background and Career Progression

Education

Mukul Baveja is a 2004 graduate of Amity Law School. He holds an LL.M. from Queen Mary University of London, which he completed in 2011.

Apoorva Murali is a 2014 graduate of IIT, Kharagpur.

Career Journey

Mukul Baveja has been associated with SAM for the past decade, bringing with him over two decades of total experience in intellectual property law. He advises clients on both contentious and non-contentious IP matters — including trademarks, copyrights, and patents — across diverse industries. He also handles cross-border IP transactions such as licensing, franchising, and technology transfers, and represents domestic and international clients in IP disputes before Indian courts, WIPO arbitration panels, and the National Internet Exchange of India.

Apoorva Murali has been associated with SAM for the past 12 years, accumulating over a decade of experience in contentious intellectual property matters and the commercial exploitation of IP. Her practice spans patents, trademarks, designs, and copyrights, and she also advises on trademarks, passing off, internet and technology issues, confidential information, data protection, and customs. She frequently represents clients before judicial and regulatory forums across India.

Strategic Significance

The dual departure of Baveja and Murali represents a meaningful addition to Trilegal‘s IP capabilities. Together, they bring complementary strengths — Baveja‘s cross-border transactional and dispute resolution experience alongside Murali‘s deep contentious IP and regulatory enforcement practice — strengthening the firm’s ability to service clients across the full spectrum of intellectual property mandates.
