Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Nine Advocates for Bombay High Court Judgeships
The Supreme Court Collegium has put forth the names of nine advocates for appointment as judges of the Bombay High Court, which is currently operating with 66 judges—well below its sanctioned strength of 94.
The recommended candidates are:
– Rajesh Sudhakar Datar
– Sachin Shivajirao Deshmukh
– Gautam Ashwin Ankhad
– Mahendra Madhavrao Nerilkar
– Nivedita Prakash Mehta
– Prafulla Surendra Kumar Khubalkar
– Ashwin Damodar Bhobe
– Rohit Wasudeo Joshi
– Advait Mahendra Sethna
These names were forwarded to the Supreme Court Collegium following two resolutions from the Bombay High Court Collegium, dated January 19 and April 19. The Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, along with two senior colleagues, evaluated and recommended these advocates for elevation.
The Supreme Court Collegium has deemed all nine candidates fit for judicial appointment, stating, “We have scrutinized the material on record and considered the observations made by the Department of Justice.”
This move aims to address the existing shortfall of judges in the Bombay High Court, enhancing its capacity to deliver justice efficiently.
