PM Modi Holds Bilateral Talks with Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi on 22 June

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral discussions with the visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Saturday

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, shared that PM Modi warmly welcomed his Bangladeshi counterpart, noting that the two leaders have met ten times since 2019.

“Strengthening India-Bangladesh Friendship! PM Narendra Modi warmly welcomed PM Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh at Hyderabad House ahead of their bilateral talks. The two leaders have met ten times since 2019, leading to unprecedented transformations in the relationship,” Jaiswal posted on X.

Ceremonial Welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Sheikh Hasina, the first foreign guest on a bilateral state visit to India following the formation of the Modi 3.0 government, received a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier in the day.

The Ministry of External Affairs described this as a ceremonial welcome for a “special partner.”

The Bangladesh PM arrived in India on Friday for a two-day state visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi.

“A ceremonial welcome for a special partner! PM @narendramodi received PM Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, as the first guest on a bilateral state visit after the formation of the new government in India,” MEA spokesperson Jaiswal posted on X.

Meetings with Delegates

Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister Modi met with ministers and delegates from both countries at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Union Minister JP Nadda, and Ministers of State Jitendra Singh and Kirti Vardhan Singh were present to welcome the Bangladeshi PM.

Homage to Mahatma Gandhi

Following the formal welcome, PM Hasina paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

“Heartfelt homage to Bapu! PM Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Mahatma’s ideals continue to guide our close and warm relationship,” the MEA spokesperson noted.

Boosting Bilateral Relations

This visit is expected to significantly boost India-Bangladesh relations, according to Jaiswal.

On Friday, EAM Jaishankar met with the visiting Bangladeshi PM, highlighting the “close and abiding ties” between the two nations.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was among the international leaders who attended the swearing-in ceremony of PM Modi and the Union Council of Ministers on June 9.

Strengthening India-Bangladesh Ties

India and Bangladesh share a multifaceted relationship rooted in a shared history, culture, and geographical proximity. Under the leadership of PM Modi and Sheikh Hasina, the two countries have further strengthened their warm ties.

In 2023, bilateral activities between the two countries showcased the strength of their relationship. Both Prime Ministers jointly inaugurated the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline on March 18 virtually. PM Hasina also participated virtually in the Inaugural Session of the Voice of the Global South Summit on January 11, 2023, and the second Virtual Voice of the Global South Summit on November 17, 2023.
