India stands out for its diversity, scale, capacity, potential, and performance, making it the world’s best prospect for the 21st century, PM Modi stated on Monday.
Speaking at the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investors Meet and Expo (RE-INVEST 2024) in Gandhinagar, Modi emphasized that India’s solar revolution will be a significant chapter in the history of this century.
The Prime Minister noted that, in the first 100 days of his government’s third term, every key sector for the nation’s rapid progress has been addressed. He highlighted India’s ambition to not only rise to the top but to maintain its position for the next millennium. “Our energy needs for becoming a developed nation by 2047 are clear. Without sufficient oil and gas resources, we are focusing on solar, wind, nuclear, and hydro power,” Modi said.
He also stressed that the world is beginning to recognize India as the ideal country for global solutions in the 21st century. According to Modi, green energy and achieving net zero emissions are not just trendy phrases for India but vital goals. His government has launched numerous initiatives in the green energy space, including viability gap funding for offshore green energy projects with a Rs 7,000 crore budget and Rs 12,000 crore allocated for 31,000 MW of hydro power.
Modi reiterated India’s goal to become one of the top three global economies, noting the massive scale of initiatives like the construction of seven crore houses for the poor, of which four crore were completed in the previous term. He also mentioned projects like the approval of 12 industrial cities, high-speed road corridors, and the launch of 15 Vande Bharat trains.
India is a leader in meeting climate goals, having met its Paris Agreement commitments nine years ahead of schedule. Modi emphasized that the country’s renewable energy target of 500 GW is well underway, supported by initiatives like the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojana,’ a rooftop solar scheme that enables households to generate their own electricity. The Prime Minister revealed that 13 million families have registered for the scheme, with over 325,000 already having installed solar rooftops.
He further highlighted efforts to develop Ayodhya and 16 other cities as “solar cities” where all services will be powered by solar energy. The Prime Minister expressed that India’s solar revolution would be a defining chapter in the 21st century, and that India’s commitment to renewable energy is evident in every sector.
India’s leadership extends to the global level, with initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance, launched during the G20 summit. The country is also working to become a leader in the green hydrogen sector, with a Rs 20,000 crore green hydrogen mission already in place.
Modi concluded by reaffirming India’s commitment to a sustainable future, citing the country’s push for a circular economy and its drive to meet the growing demand for renewable energy through supportive policies. He emphasized that India is not only meeting its own needs but also addressing the future of humanity, guided by Mahatma Gandhi’s belief in using resources responsibly.
