Karnataka HC Directs Actor Darshan to Approach Magistrate Court for Home Food and Amenities in Prison

Actor Darshan Directed to Approach Magistrate Court for Prison Amenities: Karnataka HC

BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Friday instructed actor Darshan, an accused in the S Renukaswamy murder case, to seek permission from the magistrate court to receive home-cooked food, a bed, and clothes during his imprisonment.

Justice SR Krishna Kumar issued the directive, asking Darshan’s counsel to file the application with the magistrate on Saturday. The magistrate is expected to decide on the request by July 26. The court has adjourned the hearing on Darshan’s petition to July 29. The petition requests the prison authorities to allow him home food, bed, clothes, and books.

Previously, the prosecution objected to Darshan’s petition, arguing that he should first make a representation to the Inspector General of Prisons. If denied, he should then approach the magistrate court, rather than the high court directly. The prosecution also contended that, according to the prison manual, Darshan, being an accused in a murder case, is not entitled to a bed and clothes. The prosecution also raised concerns about accountability if Darshan were to receive home food.
