Kapil Sibal Criticizes Publicity of PM Modi’s Participation in Ganpati Puja at CJI’s Residence

Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Kapil Sibal, on Thursday, expressed concerns over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at a Ganpati puja held at Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s residence

Sibal argued that private events involving high-ranking officials should not be publicized, as it may lead to unnecessary speculation about institutions.

He stated that individuals holding the highest offices, such as the Prime Minister, President, or Chief Justice of India, should avoid situations that could lead to gossip or misinterpretation about their respective roles. According to Sibal, the Prime Minister should have refrained from attending the private event, as it might send the wrong message.

On Wednesday, Modi had shared on social media about his participation in the Ganesh puja at CJI Chandrachud’s Delhi residence, accompanied by a photograph from the event. Sibal expressed his surprise upon seeing the viral clip and emphasized his respect for Chief Justice Chandrachud’s integrity. However, he maintained that public functionaries should keep private events separate from their official positions and avoid making them public.

Sibal further stated that the Prime Minister, and those who advised him, should have recognized the potential implications of attending such a private event. He expressed concerns over the impact such a publicly shared moment could have on public perception of the judiciary and the executive.

Indira Jaising, another prominent senior lawyer, also voiced her disapproval on social media, stating that the event compromised the separation of powers between the judiciary and the executive. She called for the Supreme Court Bar Association to publicly condemn the perceived compromise of judicial independence.
