Veteran CPI(M) Leader Sitaram Yechury Passes Away at 72

On September 12, 72-year-old Sitaram Yechury, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), passed away

Yechury had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on August 19, and had been placed on respiratory support, as earlier stated by the party.

The CPI(M) shared that Yechury had been receiving treatment in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) for a severe respiratory tract infection. “Veteran CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury dies at 72 after a prolonged illness,” stated PTI.

The party had previously announced on social media, “He is on respiratory support, and a multidisciplinary team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition, which remains critical.” Yechury had been admitted to AIIMS’s emergency department after experiencing high fever. Sources cited by PTI revealed that his hospitalization was due to pneumonia, though initially, his condition was not deemed serious. The CPI(M) leader had also recently undergone cataract surgery.

Earlier in the year, Yechury declined an invitation to the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, referring to the event as a state-sponsored affair. In 2019, he stirred controversy by stating that the Ramayana and Mahabharata are filled with violent episodes, challenging the idea that Hindus are inherently non-violent.

Speaking at an event, Yechury remarked, “The Ramayana and Mahabharata are replete with instances of violence and war. How can one recite these epics as a pracharak and still claim that Hindus are incapable of violence? Why argue that one religion engages in violence while Hindus do not?”
