Violence Escalates in Bangladesh Anti-Quota Protests: Hindu Homes Attacked, Two Killed Including Awami Leader

Rising Tensions: Anti-Quota Protesters Target Hindu Communities

Bangladesh is facing its most severe crisis since independence as anti-quota protests spiral out of control. More than 100 people have lost their lives in the unrest, with reports emerging of targeted attacks against Hindus in various regions.

In Noakhali district, tensions have reached a breaking point, with protesters targeting Hindu homes. Exclusive footage obtained by CNN-News18 shows a group attempting to breach the gate of a residence belonging to Tanusreya Bhatta, causing panic among the residents.

In Rangpur town, the violence claimed the lives of two Hindus, including Haradhan Roy, a leader of the Hindu Awami League, and his nephew. They were attacked and lynched by protesters.

According to top sources, the Indian government is actively engaging with senior officials in Bangladesh to address the situation. “We are in communication with high-level officials in the Bangladeshi government. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is considering our recommendations, and we are working closely on this matter,” sources stated. Additionally, an advisory has been issued for Indians and students, with evacuation plans being prepared for implementation soon.

Background of the Protests

The protests in Bangladesh are centered around a 30 percent quota for government jobs allocated to the families of 1971 war veterans. Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling to reduce this quota to 5 percent, demonstrations have continued, with protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Sources indicate that opposition groups have encouraged students and citizens to arm themselves and resist police and military forces, including calls to withhold taxes and utility payments as a form of protest.

Exclusive footage also shows elements of the Bangladesh army reportedly supporting the protesters by using automatic weapons.
