Understanding the Mangaf Housing Fire in Kuwait: Insights into the Fire Tragedy That Claimed 42 Indian Lives, With 24 from Kerala

A tragic incident unfolded in Kuwait’s Mangaf area as a massive fire tore through a residential building, claiming the lives of 42 Indian nationals and a total of 49 foreign workers.

Among the deceased, 24 hailed from Kerala and 5 from Tamil Nadu. The victims, including individuals like Stephin Abraham Sabu, Ranjith, Sajan George, Lucose, Akash S. Nair, Chennasseril Saju Varghese, Akash, and Sreehari Pradeep, leave behind grieving families and shattered communities.

In response to the catastrophe, the Kerala government promptly announced financial aid, offering Rs 5 lakh to each bereaved family and Rs one lakh to the injured. Health Minister Veena George was dispatched to oversee medical treatment and the repatriation process.

Tamil Nadu also mourns the loss of five of its residents, with officials ensuring support for affected families. Efforts are underway to bring back the bodies and provide necessary medical assistance, under the directive of Chief Minister M K Stalin.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged with Kuwaiti authorities, pressing for the swift repatriation of the deceased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced ex-gratia relief from the PM Relief Fund, reaffirming the government’s commitment to aiding the affected families.

The Indian Embassy in Kuwait acted swiftly, providing assistance to the injured and coordinating with local authorities. Ambassador Adarsh Swaika visited the incident site and hospitals, ensuring support for Indian nationals. The embassy established helplines for distressed families, striving to alleviate their suffering.

As investigations into the fire continue, the Indian embassy remains in close contact with Kuwaiti authorities, aiming to provide relief and support to those affected. This tragic event underscores the vulnerability of migrant workers abroad and emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis.
