A group of nearly 30 top UN independent experts and Special Rapporteurs, including Palestinian rights Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, has called on all nations to officially recognize the State of Palestine. Their aim is to promote peace in the Middle East and ensure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Key Demands:
The experts emphasize the need for Palestine to enjoy full self-determination, including the ability to exist, determine their destiny, and develop freely with safety and security. They also urge states to refrain from threats and attacks against the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), stressing the importance of these courts operating without foreign interference.
Growing Recognition:
This call comes shortly after Ireland, Norway, and Spain announced their formal recognition of Palestine as a state, bringing the total number of UN members recognizing Palestine to 146 out of 193. While these moves aim to promote a two-state solution and peace, they have prompted Israel to recall its ambassadors from the three countries.
US Stance:
However, the United States, through President Joe Biden’s security advisor, has reiterated its opposition to the unilateral recognition of the State of Palestine. Instead, the US continues to advocate for a negotiated two-state solution.
