Thane Court Frees Trio in 19-Year-Old MCOCA Armed Robbery Case Due to Lack of Evidence

Justice Delayed: Acquittal Highlights Challenges in Proving Organized Crime Charges

A Thane court has acquitted three individuals who had been charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in connection with a nearly two-decade-old armed robbery case. The ruling, delivered by Special MCOCA Judge Amit Shete, emphasized the absence of corroborative evidence against the accused, leading the judge to conclude that the prosecution did not successfully establish the charges.

The case, which had been ongoing for 19 years, highlighted significant challenges in securing convictions under MCOCA, a law designed to combat organized crime. In his judgment, Judge Shete noted that given the circumstances and the lack of concrete evidence, the accused were entitled to the benefit of the doubt. The order, passed on September 25, was made publicly available on Saturday, bringing closure to a long-standing legal battle. The court’s decision underscores the critical importance of evidence in the judicial process, particularly in cases involving serious allegations.
