Junior Doctors in Kolkata Protest Continued Amid Government Reforms and Court Directives
In the ongoing legal and public response to the sexual assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Supreme Court has directed Wikipedia to remove any content disclosing the victim’s name and photo.
This order comes as part of a suo motu case involving the high-profile incident.
In related developments, the West Bengal government has responded to the demands of protesting junior doctors by announcing significant administrative changes. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has agreed to replace Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, the Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police North, and two senior health department officials. These changes are part of a broader effort to address the doctors’ demands for increased security and an end to what they describe as a “threat culture” in state-run hospitals.
Despite these concessions, junior doctors have decided to continue their strike and demonstrations at the Swasthya Bhawan, the health department headquarters, until all promised reforms are fully implemented. This protest is occurring despite a Supreme Court directive requiring the doctors to resume their duties by 5 PM on September 10.
The West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum, represented by senior lawyer Indira Jaising, will present their case as the apex court continues its suo motu hearing on the matter.
