Supreme Court Urges Punjab to Adopt Innovative Machine to Curb Paddy Straw Burning

Supreme Court Seeks Punjab Government’s Response on Machine to Prevent Paddy Straw Burning

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has directed the Punjab government to respond to a plea advocating for the mandatory use of a specialized machine attached to harvesters to reduce paddy straw burning.

A bench consisting of Justices Abhay S. Oka, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Augustine George Masih issued a notice to the state government regarding the petition filed by Avtar Singh Phagwara, who leads the NGO Sampuran Kheti Puran Rozgar.

The petitioner highlighted that Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana has recently developed a “surface seeding-cum-mulching” machine that can be attached to combined harvesters during paddy harvesting, aiming to mitigate the environmental impact of straw burning.
