Supreme Court to Hear Pleas for Cancellation of NEET-UG 2024

The Supreme Court will hear petitions today seeking the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 exam held on May 5 due to alleged paper leaks and malpractices

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will hear the matter post 10:30 AM. The NEET-related cases are listed as items 5 to 9 on the Court’s docket.

Government’s Opposition to Re-Test

The Central Government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) have opposed the demand for a re-test, arguing that the malpractices were localized and did not compromise the integrity of the entire exam. They cited a data analytics report by IIT Madras, which indicated no systemic failure or “mass malpractice.”

Previous Hearing Insights

During the hearing on July 8, the bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud sought responses from the Union and NTA regarding the extent of the paper leak and the feasibility of segregating wrongdoers from honest candidates. The Court stated that if the exam’s integrity was severely compromised and it was impossible to distinguish between those who benefited from fraud and those who did not, a re-test might be necessary. However, the Court emphasized that a re-test would be considered a last resort due to the potential impact on nearly 24 lakh students.
