Supreme Court Stands Firm: No Autonomous Body for OTT Content Regulation

Supreme Court Dismisses PIL for Autonomous Monitoring Body for OTT Content

NEW DELHI: On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought the establishment of an autonomous body to monitor and regulate content on over-the-top (OTT) platforms and similar services in India. The court ruled that such matters fall within the purview of policy-making, which should involve extensive consultations with various stakeholders.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, highlighted the challenges posed by PILs that focus on policy issues, noting that they detract from more pressing, genuine petitions. “This is the problem with PILs; they often address policy matters and we end up overlooking serious cases that truly require intervention,” the Chief Justice remarked.
