Supreme Court Shuts Door on Contempt Plea Over State Demolitions, Calls for Direct Appeals

Supreme Court Dismisses Contempt Plea Over Property Demolitions in Three States

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to entertain a plea alleging contempt regarding property demolitions carried out by authorities in Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.

A bench led by Justice B.R. Gavai, along with Justices P.K. Mishra and K.V. Viswanathan, noted that the petitioner had no direct or indirect connection to the alleged actions. The bench emphasized, “We don’t want to open a Pandora’s box,” indicating a preference for allowing those directly affected to bring their concerns to the court.
