Supreme Court Seeks Response from Bihar Legislative Council on RJD Leader’s Disqualification Challenge

The Supreme Court has requested a response from the Bihar Legislative Council regarding a petition filed by RJD leader Ram Bali Singh, who is challenging his disqualification as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC)

A bench consisting of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan issued notices to the Bihar Legislative Council, its secretary, and the complainant, seeking their replies on Singh’s petition.

“Notice is issued,” stated the bench, scheduling the next hearing for October 25.

The Supreme Court was reviewing Singh’s appeal, submitted through advocate Brajesh Kumar, which contests a Patna High Court ruling that had dismissed his plea against disqualification.

The high court had rejected Singh’s plea, stating that his conduct demonstrated voluntary abandonment of his political party, making him subject to disqualification.

Singh was elected as an MLC on June 29, 2020, with a term set to expire on June 28, 2026. However, he was disqualified on February 6, 2024, for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities, including making objectionable statements against RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.

The disqualification was based on a petition filed on November 2 of the previous year by Sunil Kumar Singh, RJD’s then deputy chief whip.
