Supreme Court Overturns Madras High Court’s Bail Condition for YouTuber Felix Gerald
The Supreme Court has annulled a controversial condition set by the Madras High Court requiring YouTuber G Felix Gerald to shut down his channel, ‘RED PIX 24×7,’ as a stipulation for bail. This decision follows Gerald’s arrest by Tamil Nadu police for broadcasting an interview with fellow YouTuber Savukku Shankar, in which derogatory remarks were directed at women police personnel.
Initially granted bail in August, the Madras High Court imposed the channel shutdown as a condition. Gerald challenged this directive in the Supreme Court, which granted a stay on the condition while issuing a notice to the Tamil Nadu government.
On September 6, the Supreme Court’s bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, confirmed its interim order and formally set aside the bail condition. Gerald had been arrested in May while in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, after posting the contentious interview.
During proceedings, CJI Chandrachud expressed concern over the nature of the comments made in the interview, questioning why such derogatory content was aired in the first place. “Why did you hold such shows that are scurrilous, casting aspersions on the judiciary and women police officers?” he inquired.
The interview prompted numerous complaints against both Shankar and Gerald throughout Tamil Nadu, reflecting the significant public backlash following the broadcast.
