Supreme Court Rebukes Telangana CM Revanth Reddy for Comments on Kavitha’s Bail

Supreme Court Questions Chief Minister’s Remarks, Cautions Against Casting Aspersions on Judiciary

The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed strong disapproval of statements made by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy regarding the recent bail granted to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha by the apex court. The court rebuked Reddy for implying that the bail was the result of a secret understanding between BRS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A bench comprising Justices BR Gavai, Prashant Kumar Mishra, and KV Viswanathan took issue with Reddy’s remarks, which suggested a deal between the two parties and linked the bail decision to political motives.

Justice Gavai emphasized that the court operates independently of political considerations and expressed frustration with Reddy’s audacity to cast aspersions on the judiciary. He stated that the judiciary does not require the approval of any political party to make its decisions. Justice Viswanathan further criticized Reddy, asserting that a person in his position should not make irresponsible statements undermining the judiciary.

The comments came during a hearing on a transfer petition filed by four BRS lawmakers, seeking to move a trial involving Reddy in the 2015 cash-for-votes scam outside Telangana. The lawmakers argued that a fair trial would not be possible within the state due to Reddy’s current status as Chief Minister. Initially, the court expressed reluctance to entertain the petition, but after considering Reddy’s remarks, it decided not to dismiss the issue of transfer outright.

The matter will be heard again on September 2, and the court suggested appointing a special public prosecutor for the trial.
