On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, the Supreme Court directed the faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to publish a disclaimer in various newspapers, including Marathi publications, clarifying that the dispute over the “clock” election symbol is still pending in court.
The court ordered that the disclaimer be published prominently within 36 hours.
The Bench, consisting of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and Ujjal Bhuyan, was hearing arguments between the factions led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar regarding the alleged misuse of the “clock” symbol. Advising both sides, the Bench remarked that their focus should be on engaging with voters rather than expending efforts in legal battles.
Senior advocate Balbir Singh, representing the Ajit Pawar faction, agreed to publish the disclaimer, highlighting that candidate nominations had already been filed, with the withdrawal period concluded. He argued that the Sharad Pawar faction was attempting to disrupt the election process.
On behalf of Sharad Pawar’s faction, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi countered that the “clock” symbol had long been associated with Sharad Pawar and accused the opposing side of misappropriating it. Singhvi requested the court to order Ajit Pawar’s group to adopt a new symbol.
