Supreme Court Notices UP MLA Abbas Ansari’s Plea to Attend Father Mukhtar Ansari’s ‘Fatiha’ Ceremony

UP MLA Abbas Ansari Seeks Permission to Attend Father’s ‘Fatiha’ Ceremony

Today, the Supreme Court issued a notice in response to a request from Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari, who is seeking permission to attend the ‘Fatiha’ ceremony scheduled for April 10 to commemorate his father, Mukhtar Ansari. Mukhtar Ansari, a former gangster turned politician, passed away on March 28 due to a cardiac arrest while serving a life sentence.

Abbas Ansari, currently incarcerated in connection with an arms license case, had previously been denied bail by the Allahabad High Court in November last year. The denial was based on the recovery of significant quantities of arms and ammunition from his premises in New Delhi, with the High Court expressing concerns about Ansari’s potential to influence witnesses and tamper with evidence.

During today’s hearing, Ansari’s counsel informed the Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Sandeep Mehta that the original petition sought attendance at the funeral rites but could not be listed in time. As a result, Abbas now seeks permission to attend the Fatiha ceremony on April 10.

The Bench allowed Abbas to amend his petition and scheduled the matter for April 9, directing the counsel to serve a copy of the amended petition to the respondent-State in the meantime.

Justice Kant instructed the Registry to list the matter on April 9, subject to the prior approval of the Chief Justice, clarifying that he would not be available to hold court on April 8 and hence listing the matter for the following day.

The counsel was instructed to bring up the matter during the morning session on April 9th.
