The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to grant anticipatory bail to an individual linked to a Porsche accident case in Pune that resulted in two fatalities earlier this year.
A bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah chose not to interfere with a Bombay High Court decision that had rejected anticipatory bail for Arunkumar Devnath Singh, the father of a friend of the minor accused driver.
“We are not inclined to grant relief at this stage; you may present your case at trial,” stated the bench.
Reports indicate that Singh’s minor son was in the back seat of the car, driven by another minor who was allegedly intoxicated when the vehicle collided fatally with two people on a motorcycle in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar during the early hours of May 19. The victims, later identified as IIT professionals, lost their lives in the accident.
Allegations emerged that the juvenile driver’s parents bribed medical staff to swap the driver’s blood samples with his mother’s to obscure evidence of intoxication. Singh, similarly, is accused of conspiring to replace his son’s blood samples with assistance from staff at Sassoon Hospital, a government-run facility.
On October 23, the Bombay High Court noted that there was “prima facie” evidence against Singh, suggesting a swap of blood samples for his son to evade accountability. The high court also acknowledged the prosecution’s concerns regarding Singh’s avoidance of authorities, concluding that this hindered the investigation and consequently denied his pre-arrest bail application.
