Tejas Karia’s Arbitration Expertise Cited as Key Factor for Appointment
The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of advocate Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia as a judge of the Delhi High Court. Karia, a Disputes Resolution Partner at the law firm Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, was proposed for the post by the High Court Collegium on October 25, 2023.
The Supreme Court Collegium, in a resolution dated August 29, highlighted Karia’s specialization in arbitration law, emphasizing the growing need for domain-specific expertise, especially in courts like the Delhi High Court.
The resolution also noted that Karia’s integrity remains unquestioned based on the inputs provided by the Department of Justice. Addressing concerns regarding his age, the Collegium confirmed that Karia met the minimum age requirement of 45 years at the time of his recommendation.
While his appearances in the High Court may not be as extensive, the Collegium pointed out that Karia has handled significant cases before Arbitration Tribunals. His involvement in cases before High Courts and the Supreme Court, as well as his impressive average annual professional income of Rs. 709.69 lakhs over the past five years, further demonstrated his capability.
The Collegium concluded that Karia is “eminently fit and suitable” for the position of a judge at the Delhi High Court.
