Supreme Court Clears Ramdev and Patanjali in Misleading Ads Case

Supreme Court Dismisses Contempt Case Against Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna in Patanjali Misleading Ads Case

In a significant relief for Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the contempt proceedings against them in connection with the Patanjali misleading ads case

The court closed all legal actions after they submitted an undertaking, assuring that they would refrain from using misleading advertisements in the future.

The case originated from a plea filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which challenged Ramdev and Patanjali’s statements against modern medicine. The 2022 plea highlighted that some Patanjali advertisements falsely claimed miraculous cures.

The IMA argued that these misleading advertisements were in violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1954, and the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

The Supreme Court held several hearings on the matter, during which it criticized Patanjali Ayurved’s owners, the Uttarakhand state government, and even the central government for their failure to take action against the misleading advertisements.

In July, Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved informed the court that they had ceased the sale of 14 products whose licenses were suspended by the State Licensing Authority of Uttarakhand in April. Patanjali also stated that they had instructed all media platforms to withdraw advertisements for these 14 products.
