Supreme Court Dismisses Habeas Corpus Petition Against Isha Foundation
NEW DELHI: On Friday, the Supreme Court closed the proceedings related to a habeas corpus petition concerning the Isha Foundation, led by spiritual leader Jaggi Vasudev. The petition was filed by a father who alleged that his two daughters were being held captive within the foundation’s premises in Coimbatore.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud examined the situation and determined that both women were of legal age and had voluntarily chosen to reside at the ashram, free from any coercion. The court’s decision underscores the importance of personal autonomy, especially in matters involving adults.
In this context, a habeas corpus petition seeks the court’s intervention to produce a person who is reportedly missing or unlawfully detained, reflecting the serious nature of such claims. However, the Supreme Court found no grounds to continue the proceedings, bringing the case to a close.
