Sariska Tiger Reserve: Supreme Court Halts Mining Operations Within 1km Radius

Supreme Court Bans Mining Near Sariska Tiger Reserve’s Critical Habitat

The Supreme Court issued a ban on all mining activities within a 1 km radius of the Critical Tiger Habitat (CTH) in Sariska Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan.

Justices BR Gavai, Sandeep Mehta, and SVN Bhatti directed the Rajasthan government to devise a closure plan or take necessary actions to comply with the order. The Court scheduled further hearings on the matter for July.

This decision stemmed from an application urging the Rajasthan government to halt illegal mining within a 10 km radius of Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary, particularly within 1 km of Sariska Tiger Reserve, without approval from the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL). The plea accused multiple mining companies in Rajasthan of violating Supreme Court orders regarding mining activities in the Eco-Sensitive Zones surrounding the CTH areas of Sariska Tiger Reserve.

Senior Advocate Atmaram Nadkarni represented the mining association, while Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati represented the State of Rajasthan. Advocate Parul Shukla represented the petitioner, and Advocate K Parameshwar assisted the Court as an Amicus Curiae.
