Ryan Wesley Routh, a former construction worker and outspoken supporter of Ukraine, is detained following an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Kyiv denies any involvement, while Moscow suggests a link to U.S. support for Ukraine.
Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old former construction worker from Greensboro, North Carolina, has been arrested in connection with an attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at Trump’s golf course in Florida, where gunshots were fired, and Routh was apprehended by Secret Service agents after he was found hiding in bushes and attempted to flee in a black car.
Routh, who had previously expressed a desire to participate in armed conflict in Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion, was found to have a Biden-Harris bumper sticker on his pickup truck. He had made public statements indicating his willingness to “fight and die” in Ukraine and had traveled to Kyiv to support the Ukrainian cause. In interviews, including one with Newsweek Romania, he spoke emotionally about his mission to recruit foreign volunteers to support Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials have denied any connections to Routh, criticizing suggestions that they were involved as propaganda tactics by Moscow. The Kremlin has implied that the assassination attempt reflects potential consequences of U.S. support for Ukraine.
