Prime Minister Narendra Modi Highlights Global South Issues at G7 Summit in Italy

At the Group of Seven (G7) Summit’s Outreach Session in Apulia, Italy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the concerns of the Global South, particularly Africa

Warmly welcomed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Modi addressed the session, which focused on crucial topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean.

Modi underscored India’s responsibility to represent the Global South’s concerns on the global stage. He highlighted the significant milestone achieved during India’s G20 presidency—the African Union’s admission as a permanent member of the G20.

In his speech, Modi reiterated India’s dedication to its “AI for All” mission, advocating for the use of artificial intelligence to promote progress and improve lives. He highlighted India’s role as a founding member of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, fostering international cooperation in this field.

Discussing environmental goals, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070, stressing the importance of sustainable development.

During his visit, Modi met Pope Francis, inviting him to visit India and expressing admiration for the Pope’s dedication to service and environmental stewardship. Modi shared this significant invitation on X, formerly known as Twitter.

French President Emmanuel Macron commended Modi’s initiative on artificial intelligence, recognizing India’s leadership in advancing AI technology as the G20 chair. This praise highlighted the global acknowledgment of India’s efforts in this area.

On the summit’s sidelines, Modi held bilateral meetings with several world leaders, including Macron, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi and Macron discussed strengthening partnerships in defense, nuclear energy, space, education, digital infrastructure, and critical technologies. They agreed to enhance cooperation in artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, energy, and sports, and to prepare jointly for the upcoming AI Summit and United Nations Oceans Conference in France in 2025.

Modi’s meeting with Sunak focused on enhancing bilateral ties in trade, investment, and technology. They discussed potential collaborations in healthcare, climate change, and education, reinforcing their commitment to a robust partnership.

In his conversation with Zelensky, Modi expressed India’s support for peace and stability in the region, discussing humanitarian aid and diplomatic solutions to conflicts. Modi emphasized India’s readiness to assist in Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts.

US President Joe Biden acknowledged India, along with Brazil and Argentina, as key partners in the global supply of minerals essential for clean energy technologies, underscoring India’s strategic importance.

Throughout the summit, Modi championed the interests of the Global South, advocating for a more inclusive approach to global issues. His participation at the G7 Summit highlighted India’s growing influence and commitment to international cooperation for a better future.
