Pragya Singh Thakur Granted Exemption Due to Illness, Next Hearing Scheduled for March 28
On Friday, a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court canceled the bailable warrant issued against Pragya Singh Thakur, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a significant accused individual in the 2008 Malegaon Blast case.
Special judge AK Lahoti, who had previously issued the warrant against Thakur for her failure to appear during the ongoing trial, annulled the warrant after Thakur made her court appearance.
Earlier, the court had directed Thakur to appear on March 20 and pay a fine of ₹10,000 to cancel the warrant. However, on that day, Thakur’s lawyer requested an exemption citing her hospitalization, and it was revealed that Thakur had not been served with the warrant by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the prosecution agency.
The court granted Thakur an exemption for March 20 and suspended the execution of the warrant until her discharge from the hospital. Thakur appeared in court today with assistance and submitted an application through her lawyer seeking the cancellation of the bailable warrant.
After reviewing her submissions and medical documents, the court accepted her application and canceled the warrant. The court acknowledged Thakur’s ill-health and granted her exemption from recording her statement for the day.
Thakur’s lawyer presented medical evidence indicating her current health condition, emphasizing her inability to sit, walk, or even sign documents without assistance. Acknowledging these circumstances, the court allowed the exemption for the day.
The court instructed Thakur to attend the next hearing on March 28.
