PM Modi to Attend G7 Summit in Italy, Bilateral Meet with Italian PM Georgia Meloni Expected

Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi)  is set to embark on his first overseas trip to to attend G7 Summit in Italy, since assuming office for the third consecutive term, meeting expected with Giorgia Meloni.

He will depart for Italy on June 13 to participate in the 50th G7 Summit, where he is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Key Details of the Visit

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra confirmed the trip, stating that Prime Minister Modi had been invited by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to attend the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy. India has been invited as an Outreach Country for the summit, marking Modi’s first overseas travel in his current term.

India’s Participation in G7 Summit

This will be India’s 11th participation in the G7 Summit and the 5th consecutive participation by PM Modi. The summit presents an opportunity for India to engage with other world leaders on issues of importance to both India and the Global South.

Agenda and Focus Areas

The G7 Summit will focus on various critical issues, including Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. Modi will participate in the Outreach session along with other invited countries on June 14, where discussions will revolve around these key agenda items.

Significance of Participation

Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit provides an opportunity to follow up on the outcomes of the G20 Summit held under India’s presidency last year. It also allows for deliberations on issues significant for the Global South, reinforcing India’s role on the global stage.

Global Leaders in Attendance

The G7 summit will see the participation of leaders from prominent nations, including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also scheduled to attend a session on the Russian invasion of his country.

The summit is expected to be dominated by discussions on the ongoing war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza, highlighting the pressing global challenges that require collective action.
