Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) is poised to make history by taking the oath of office for a third term on Saturday, as BJP emerges largest party in 2024 general elections. This landmark event marks him as the first three-term leader of India since Jawaharlal Nehru.
Ahead of the swearing-in, PM Modi submitted his resignation, along with that of his cabinet, to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
BJP’s Electoral Performance and Coalition Dynamics
In the recent elections, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 240 seats, falling short of the 272-majority mark. However, with the support of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising 53 seats, the BJP is set to secure its third consecutive term in power.
PM Modi’s Electoral Victory in Varanasi
Modi retained his Lok Sabha seat in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, defeating Congress’ Ajay Rai by a margin of less than 1.5 lakh votes. This victory solidifies his position as a three-time Member of Parliament from the sacred city.
BJP’s Ambitious Targets and Opposition Performance
Despite the BJP’s ambitious target of 370 seats, the party faced stiff competition from the opposition alliance, led by the Congress. The opposition’s remarkable performance, securing 232 seats, posed a challenge to the BJP’s dominance in key states.
BJP’s Regional Successes and Setbacks
While the BJP succeeded in states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, it faced setbacks in Tamil Nadu. However, the party made significant inroads in Kerala, winning its first-ever Lok Sabha seat in the southern state.
PM Modi’s Assurance and Acknowledgment of Key Allies
Addressing supporters at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Modi expressed gratitude for the people’s faith in the NDA for a third term. He also acknowledged the contributions of key allies, such as Telugu Desam Party leader Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal (United) boss Nitish Kumar, highlighting their role as influential coalition-era politicians.
Coalition Dynamics and Future Plans
As the NDA and the opposition alliance strategize in the wake of the election results, attention is focused on the role of key allies like TDP and JDU. The Congress and the opposition alliance are considering late approaches to convince these allies, which could potentially impact Modi’s third term and the BJP’s future plans.
