“From July 1, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Act will come into effect, replacing the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Evidence Act,” Meghwal stated. He emphasized that these new laws introduce many innovative ideas suited to the current situation.
Legislative Background
The new laws were passed by Parliament in December 2023 and received Presidential assent the same month. However, their implementation was delayed until the Centre issued a notification on February 25, setting July 1 as the effective date.
Concerns and Requests
Recently, Senior Advocate Indira Jaising wrote to the Law Minister requesting a delay in the implementation of these laws. Several lawyers and academics have also expressed concerns regarding the new legislation. Despite these requests, the government remains firm on the July 1 implementation date.
