NEET UG 2024: Supreme Court to Hear Pleas Related to Controversy on Monday

NEET UG 2024: Petitioners Seek Cancellation, Re-Test, and Probe into Alleged Malpractices

The Supreme Court is set to hear a batch of petitions concerning the NEET-UG 2024, which took place on May 5, on Monday, July 22. The hearing will address various issues related to the medical entrance exam, including allegations of paper leaks and irregularities.

The petitions include requests for the cancellation of the exam, a re-test, and an investigation into the alleged malpractices. The court will review these cases to address the concerns raised by multiple parties.

On July 11, the Supreme Court had postponed the hearing to July 18 to allow time for responses from the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA). The court had noted that it received a status report from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the probe’s progress. The Centre’s additional affidavit, submitted last week, stated that an analysis conducted by IIT-Madras found no evidence of widespread malpractice or abnormally high scores among a localized group of candidates.

The data released by the NTA, which includes results for over 32 lakh candidates from 4,750 centres, was made available in a detailed drop-down format for each centre, rather than a cumulative report. This data was disclosed following the Supreme Court’s directive. Preliminary analysis suggests that candidates allegedly involved in irregularities performed poorly compared to others, though some centres showed high-performing students.

The court had previously observed that the NEET-UG 2024 process had been “breached” and indicated that a re-test might be necessary if the integrity of the exam was significantly compromised. It has sought comprehensive details from the NTA and CBI regarding the timing, manner of the alleged paper leak, and the extent of the irregularities.

More than 23.33 lakh students took the NEET-UG 2024 at 4,750 centres across 571 cities, including 14 cities overseas. The Centre and NTA have argued that scrapping the exam would be “counterproductive” and would adversely affect many honest candidates if no large-scale breach of confidentiality is proven.

The Supreme Court’s upcoming decision will be crucial in determining the future course of action regarding the NEET-UG 2024.
