A court in Nashik, Maharashtra, has summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case related to alleged derogatory comments about Hindutva leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The summons was issued after the court found prima facie evidence of defamation, requiring Gandhi to either appear in person or through his legal counsel on a future date yet to be decided.
The defamation case stems from a complaint filed by the director of an NGO, who alleges that Gandhi’s remarks, made during a press conference and speech in November 2022, damaged Savarkar’s reputation. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Deepali Parimal Kaduskar issued the summons on September 27, stating that there is sufficient basis to proceed under Sections 499 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code.
