MP High Court Upholds FIR Against Man for ‘Offensive’ Instagram Post on Lord Ram and Yogi Adityanath

MP High Court Rejects Petition of Man Accused of Posting ‘Objectionable’ Content on Instagram

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has upheld the decision to maintain an FIR against Mohammad Bilal, who was accused of posting offensive content on Instagram targeting Lord Ram, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Hinduism. The court dismissed Bilal’s petition to quash the FIR, which was registered on August 17, 2023.

Bilal faced serious charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 294 (obscene acts), 153A (promoting enmity), and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings), as well as sections 3(1) and 3(2) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

In his defense, Bilal claimed that his Instagram account had been hacked two days prior to the incident, leading to the unauthorized posting of the objectionable material. However, the court found insufficient grounds to dismiss the charges, emphasizing the importance of investigating the matter further. The ruling underscores the judiciary’s stance on protecting religious sentiments and maintaining public order.
