Technological Dependence Has Drawbacks, Says CJI DY Chandrachud Amid Microsoft Outage
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, known for advocating technological advancements in the Indian judiciary, addressed the drawbacks of technological dependence on Saturday. He referred to the Microsoft outage on July 19, which disrupted computers and servers worldwide, affecting services and telecommunications.
Speaking at the Vigentennial Celebrations of the Madurai bench of Madras High Court, CJI Chandrachud shared how the outage nearly cancelled his flight from Delhi to Madurai. “I am an ardent believer in the benefits of technology, but yesterday we saw the adverse effects of technological dependence. Numerous flights from Delhi were cancelled after the Microsoft outage. However, the love of the people of Madurai ensured my presence here today,” he said.
The Microsoft outage also caused a significant disruption globally, with many Windows users experiencing the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Contrary to initial assumptions, the issue was caused not by Microsoft but by a recent update from Crowdstrike, a US-based cybersecurity company. The BSOD is a critical error screen that forces the system to freeze, making it temporarily unusable.
The outage also affected the live-streaming of several Supreme Court courtrooms, forcing lawyers to travel physically to the top court and seek adjournments for their cases. CJI Chandrachud had to complete his board of cases by 12 PM to travel to Madurai.
