Massive Fire at Delhi Newborn Hospital Claims Seven Infant Lives, Owner Under Investigation

A massive fire broke out at the New Born Baby Care Hospital in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area on Saturday night, resulting in the tragic death of seven infants and leaving several others injured.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her grief, stating that the death of children due to a fire in a hospital in Delhi is heart-rending and offered prayers for strength to the bereaved parents. “I pray for the speedy recovery of other children injured in this incident,” she said.

The fire erupted late at night, prompting an immediate response from the Delhi Fire Services, who dispatched nine fire tenders to the scene after receiving a call at 11:32 pm.

The Delhi Police have filed an FIR against Naveen Chinchi, the proprietor of Baby Care New Born Hospital, under IPC sections 336, 304A, and 34. Investigations are currently underway to determine if the hospital had a fire NOC. The owner of the hospital is reportedly absconding.

Officials confirmed that twelve newborns were rescued from the hospital. The rescued infants have been transferred to East Delhi Advanced NICU hospital for further treatment and care.

On May 26, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as heart-wrenching, and warned that those responsible for negligence would face strict consequences. Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also stated that the strictest punishment would be given to those found negligent or involved in any wrongdoing.

According to PTI, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) reported that the fire broke out at Baby Care New Born Hospital in Shahdara on Saturday night. Twelve newborns were rescued from the facility, but seven of them did not survive, according to DFS chief Atul Garg. Five babies are currently undergoing treatment at another hospital. Garg added that the fire was caused by a blast in an oxygen cylinder, which spread rapidly.

“It was a very tough operation. We formed two teams; one team focused on firefighting due to the blast of cylinders, which created a chain reaction. We had to ensure our own safety while also conducting rescue operations for the babies. Unfortunately, we could not save all the children. We removed all twelve babies to the hospital, but upon arrival, six were declared dead. It is a regrettable incident,” the DFS chief said.

The bodies of the deceased infants have been moved to GTB Hospital for postmortem. The police stated that action will be taken against the hospital owner, identified as Naveen Kichi.
