MakeMyTrip and Go First Fined ₹19,000 for Travel Disruptions After Flight Cancellations

A District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Chandigarh imposed a fine of ₹19,000 on travel company MakeMyTrip and Go First Airlines following flight cancellations and rescheduling that caused a family to miss part of their vacation in Thailand.

The case, Amir Kohar v MakeMyTrip and Anr., was heard by a bench comprising President Pawanjit Singh and members Surjeet Kaur and Suresh Kumar Sardana.

The commission ruled that both companies were accountable under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020. Despite MakeMyTrip’s defense that it was merely an intermediary and not responsible for the flight disruptions, the court noted that under the e-commerce rules, it had a duty to ensure proper service and refunds. Go First, having failed to appear in the hearings, was found negligent for its repeated flight cancellations.

The court ordered both companies to refund ₹8,900 for the complainant’s losses, including hotel bookings and rescheduling costs. Additionally, they were directed to pay ₹10,000 as compensation for mental distress and legal fees.
