Looting Plagues Wayanad After Deadly Landslides: Authorities Ramp Up Security

‘We Lost Everything’: Looting Reported in Wayanad’s Landslide-Affected Areas

In the wake of the devastating landslides that struck Kerala’s Wayanad district on July 30, the disaster’s aftermath has brought further distress to affected residents. The calamity, which resulted in the destruction of homes and the loss of hundreds of lives, has now been compounded by thefts from abandoned properties. As displaced villagers return to their homes, they are finding their properties looted, with valuable items stolen amid the chaos. This has led to increased police patrols in the disaster-hit areas to curb the thefts.

Residents of the landslide-ravaged villages, including Chooralmala and Mundakkai, have reported broken doors and stolen belongings, even from temporary shelters where they are staying. Many have expressed frustration and called for stringent action against those exploiting the tragedy for theft.

Authorities have responded by enhancing night patrols to prevent unauthorized access to the affected areas. They have also warned that anyone entering these areas without permission will face legal consequences.

As rescue operations continue, efforts have intensified with the use of advanced radars, drones, and heavy machinery. The death toll from the landslides has risen to 219, with ongoing searches for survivors and remains. The state government is also planning to establish a new township to rehabilitate the displaced victims. Nearly 1,300 rescue personnel from various forces are engaged in the operation, which has so far led to the recovery of additional bodies and body parts, while approximately 206 individuals remain unaccounted for.
