TMC Acknowledges Concerns Raised by Jawhar Sircar, Vows Action on Corruption
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh acknowledged his agreement with parts of Jawhar Sircar’s resignation letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while affirming the party’s intent to tackle the concerns raised.
Ghosh commented on Sircar’s decision to step down from his Rajya Sabha seat, emphasizing, “Jawhar Sircar was one of the finest bureaucrats in the country, and his decision is personal. While I won’t comment directly on his choice, we respect his right to do so.”
Ghosh added that the party agrees with significant portions of Sircar’s letter but reaffirmed that, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, the party would address public concerns regarding civil society and take visible steps towards resolving them while remaining committed to the party’s goals.
Sircar, a former IAS officer who joined the Rajya Sabha in 2021, voiced his disillusionment with the TMC’s handling of corruption, particularly in the aftermath of the scandal involving the former education minister. In his letter, Sircar criticized the party’s lack of action against corruption and the heavy-handed tactics employed by certain leaders, leading to widespread public discontent. He expressed frustration that despite Mamata Banerjee’s anti-corruption stance, little progress had been made, which led him to resign.
Sircar also highlighted incidents such as the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, noting the state government’s slow response amidst protests demanding justice. Ghosh responded by pointing out that the matter was under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Supreme Court, ensuring that the situation would be addressed through the proper legal channels.
Furthermore, Sircar’s letter criticized the extravagant lifestyle of some local leaders, contrasting it with the modest lives of civil servants. He expressed concern over their wealth and assets, which he said caused frustration among the public. Sircar reaffirmed his commitment to fighting corruption and authoritarianism at both state and national levels.
Despite Sircar’s criticisms, Ghosh maintained that the party would remain focused on addressing these issues from within.
