Karnataka High Court Upholds Bail for HD Revanna and Co-Accused in Kidnapping Case
The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday upheld the bail granted to Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Revanna, accused of abducting a woman, dismissing a plea by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) seeking cancellation of his bail. Justice M Nagaprasanna ruled in favor of Revanna, confirming the bail granted to him on May 13.
In addition to Revanna, the court also granted bail to six other accused in the case, subject to the execution of bail bonds worth ₹5 lakh each.
Senior Advocate Ravivarma Kumar, representing the SIT, argued that in a case of such a serious nature, bail should not have been granted. He claimed that the trial court had wrongfully granted bail and urged for its cancellation.
In defense, Senior Advocate CV Nagesh, representing Revanna, countered that the prosecution was not only seeking the cancellation of bail but also challenging the order that granted it. He argued that the charge of kidnapping could not be sustained as the alleged victim was not a minor, and there was no deceit involved in the abduction claim.
Nagesh clarified that the woman involved was a maid servant, who had been called without any element of threat or detention. He further stated that there was no evidence to suggest that the woman, who was also the victim of rape and sexual assault in a separate case against Prajwal Revanna, was abducted at HD Revanna or his wife’s behest.
The case against HD Revanna is tied to the sexual abuse allegations against his son, Prajwal Revanna, a suspended JD(S) leader. HD Revanna is facing two criminal cases—one for sexual assault and the other for kidnapping. He was granted bail in both cases on May 13.
The sexual abuse charges against Prajwal Revanna surfaced after over 2,900 videos depicting sexual assaults on several women were circulated online and through other platforms. Prajwal Revanna remains in prison.
