Kapil Sibal and Pradeep Rai Nominate for Supreme Court Bar Association Presidency

Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and Pradeep Rai Enter Race for SCBA Presidency

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the upcoming elections for the position of President at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), having filed his nomination ahead of the scheduled elections on May 16. He will be facing off against Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai, who previously held the role of Vice-President at SCBA for the terms 2021-22 and 2022-2023.

Sibal’s entry marks his return to the SCBA electoral fray after more than two decades since his last tenure as president, which spanned from 1995 to 2002. With a long and illustrious legal career, Sibal has served as the Additional Solicitor General of India in 1989–90, entered the bar in 1972, and earned his Senior Advocate designation in 1983. He later ventured into politics, representing the Congress party as an MP from Chandni Chowk in Delhi starting from 2004, and subsequently serving in the Cabinets of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during both UPA administrations.

Meanwhile, Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai brings over 25 years of legal experience to the contest, boasting a diverse portfolio of cases across various courts and bodies in India. During his tenure as Vice-President at SCBA, Rai established several sub-committees aimed at addressing various issues within the legal community and launched several schemes beneficial to SCBA members, including discounted travel, affordable housing, and free medical facilities.

The incumbent SCBA President, Senior Advocate Adish Aggarwala, is seeking re-election. In addition to Sibal, Rai, and Aggarwala, Senior Advocate Priya Hingorani and Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave are also vying for positions in the upcoming elections.

The SCBA elections are scheduled to take place on May 16, with voting hours from 10 am to 5 pm. Voters will cast their ballots for the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The deadline for filing nominations is May 9, with a draft list of candidates set to be displayed on May 10. The final list of nominations will be published on May 12. A debate between the presidential and honorary secretary candidates will be held on the Supreme Court lawns, followed by vote counting on May 18.
