Kanwar Yatra: NGO APCR Argues Mandate Discriminates Against Muslims, Violates Civil Rights
A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court by the NGO Association of Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), challenging the recent directive by the Uttar Pradesh government requiring shop owners to display their names outside their establishments during the Kanwar Yatra. The petition will be heard on Monday, July 22, 2024, by a bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti.
The Uttar Pradesh government issued the directive on July 19, mandating that food and beverage shops along the Kanwar routes display the name and identity of the operator/owner. The government justified this decision as necessary for maintaining proper law and order.
However, the directive has faced criticism for allegedly discriminating against Muslims and fostering societal divisions. The APCR’s petition argues that the order unfairly targets specific communities and violates their rights.
This petition also coincides with press reports indicating that similar orders have been issued in Madhya Pradesh, and that shop owners in Uttar Pradesh have been directed to display the names of their employees outside their establishments.
The Supreme Court’s decision on this matter is awaited with keen interest, as it has significant implications for civil rights and religious harmony in the region.
