The Delhi High Court on Monday denied the bail plea of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha in cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concerning the Delhi Excise Policy of 2021-22
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma delivered the ruling.
Arrest and Charges
Kavitha was arrested by the ED on March 15 in Hyderabad and subsequently taken into custody by the CBI on April 11. Both agencies allege her involvement in bribery and money laundering linked to the Delhi Excise Policy.
Previous Court Ruling
The trial court had previously denied her bail on May 6.
Background of the Case
The case dates back to 2022 when the CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) accusing that the Delhi Excise Policy was manipulated to favor monopolies and cartels in the liquor trade. According to the CBI and ED, certain groups from South India benefited, and part of their profits allegedly funded the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) campaign in the Goa assembly elections.
Other Accused
Kavitha is among several political leaders arrested in this case, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP leaders Sanjay Singh (currently out on bail) and Manish Sisodia. The AAP itself has also been named as an accused in the case.
